Here at The Whisky Exchange, we’re always on the lookout for something different, whether it’s a new take on an established favourite or a totally new idea that makes us sit up and take notice. Our Covent Garden shop manager Alex has years of experience in the drinks world and has chosen some bottles that you might otherwise have overlooked. Be adventurous!
TROIS RIVIERES CUVEE DU MOULIN RUM
Agricole rum is unique in that it is made purely with sugar-cane juice, as opposed to the more common molasses. The result is a clean, pure rum, given extra spiciness from three years’ ageing in barrel – a great example from Martinique’s best-known rum producer.
Alex’s comment: ‘Spicy and full flavoured, with a lovely dry character, this is almost like a rye whiskey, and not your typical big, sweet rum.’
MARKA CASK AGED BITTERS
Made in Norway, Marka is a digestive bitters made with 16 botanicals, including juniper, wormwood and gentian. The traditional Norwegian serve is with tonic or with beer, but Alex has an alternative…
Alex: ‘An elegant and herbal bitters with great balance. Drink this one straight from the freezer.’
MARC TEMPE ZELLENBERG PINOT BLANC 2013
Pinot Blanc is one of the signature grapes in France’s Alsace region, and this wine from rising star Marc Tempe is a terrific example, brimming with notes of fresh apple, stone fruit and citrus.
Alex: ‘Mouth-coating and deliciously aromatic, this has a wonderful waxy texture and is a superb match for Asian food.’
BLAIR ATHOL 1988 SIGNATORY FOR TWE
Bottled exclusively for The Whisky Exchange by Signatory Vintage, this Blair Athol whisky spent 27 years in a refill sherry butt, and has a complex character of spiced apple, citrus peel and toffee.
Alex: ‘A sweet, rich attack, moving to a meaty, savoury character on the palate. This is a textbook well-aged, sherried Highlander.’
Four delicious drinks, all ideal if you’re looking for something a little different this summer. All are available to buy right now from The Whisky Exchange website.
